History

The Society of training and continuing education (SOFEDUC) was founded in 1988 at the initiative of the Canadian Association for Adult Education of French-language universities (ACDEAULF).

The mandate of the SOFEDUC is to accredit organizations that can issue continuing education units (CEUs) that meet high quality standards, similar to those of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) States States.

Mission

SOFEDUC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote, recognize, and evaluate the quality of continuing education offered by public and private organizations in Canada, in compliance with ten Quality Standards.

Vision

SOFEDUC’s vision is to become the leader in promoting and preserving high quality standards in continuing education in Québec and across all Canada.

Values

Rigor – Ethics – Equity – Quality

SOFEDUC upholds rigor and integrity in the management of its operations, in its relationships with its members and collaborators, and in the application of the criteria for awarding Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

To meet this challenge, SOFEDUC is ready to collaborate with all key stakeholders in continuing education and adult learning to foster the development of initiatives and innovations that support the implementation and adherence to Quality Standards in continuing education.

Quality standards

SOFEDUC established ten (10) quality standards in continuing training that must be met.

  • Standard 1 – Each training activity is planned based on the identified needs of an individual or a specific category of individuals.

  • Standard 2 – Clear and concise statements describe the learning objectives targeted by each training activity or program.

  • Standard 3 – Each training activity is designed, supervised, and delivered by a competent instructor or team of instructors.

  • Standard 4 – For each activity, the content and training strategies are appropriate to the targeted learning objectives.

  • Standard 5 – When a training activity or program results in the issuance of CEUs, participants must demonstrate that they have achieved the learning objectives.

  • Standard 6 – Each training activity or program is evaluated by the participants who benefit from it.

  • Standard 7 – Any training activity, whether in-person, virtual, or remote, must take place in an environment conducive to learning.

  • Standard 8 – The accredited organization designates a “responsible unit” to ensure the development and administration of training activities.

  • Standard 9 – The accredited organization maintains a system of continuous improvement to ensure the quality of its training services and compliance with CEU awarding standards.

  • Standard 10 – The accredited organization keeps a complete record of each training activity for at least seven years and can provide, upon request, a copy of the certificate of participation or completion for each participant.
